The new D.A.R.E. (drug abuse resistance education) elementary curriculum is focused on a decision making model for the students.
The lessons cover issues that most youngsters will face during their teen-aged years. The new curriculum attempts to draw
more ideas from the students and focuses on how they would respond in different types of situations. Teaching in such a manner
allows the officer to tailor the lessons to suit the needs of our community. The success of the D.A.R.E. Program relies on
the support the child receives not only from the officer teaching the lessons, but also from the school district and most
importantly the child's parents.
The D.A.R.E. lessons taught in first, second and third grade focus mainly on keeping our children safe. These lessons
focus on why it is important to follow directions, know your telephone number, stay away from strangers, as well as other
every day situations our children may encounter. Having a police officer in the classroom allows the student to become more
comfortable with the police. Being in the classroom allows the student to see the officer in a more friendly environment.
